National Strategic Plan of Action on Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are chronic, non-contagious diseases capable of causing long term debilitation and disability if not prevented or properly controlled. NCDs affect the highly productive populations thereby posing a heavy socio-economic burden and consequently undermining national development. In 2012, a total of 56 million deaths were recorded and 38 million of these deaths were caused by NCDs (mainly cardiovascular diseases, cancer and chronic respiratory diseases) (WHO, 2014). In Nigeria, NCDs accounted for 27% of the total deaths in 2008
